By popular demand, I have the pleasure and honor to present release
candidate 1.0-rc1 of OpenLayers. If you all like it, we will fix
whatever major bugs remain and release it as 1.0 "Cambridgeport" early
next week.
You can get the code from:
http://openlayers.org/download/OpenLayers-1.0-rc1.tar.gz
You can use it directly from:
http://openlayers.org/api/1.0/OpenLayers.js
This URL will continue to point to the stable release, once it is
available.
In general, the following URL will point to the most recent
stable release of OpenLayers:
http://openlayers.org/api/OpenLayers.js
For the time being, this URL will point to the latest release
candidate, until we actually make a stable release.
*** PLEASE *** test the heck out of it in whatever browsers you like
and let us know what you think! When sending bug reports, please be as
detailed as possible. When sending kudos, please do likewise.
As always, the very latest development version will be available from:
http://openlayers.org/dev/lib/OpenLayers.js
A note about versioning in OpenLayers: We are for the time being
following a X.Y (or X.Y.Z) versioning pattern. The X digit will refer
to the API version, and will change when the backwards compatibility
with the API is broken. The Y digit refers to incremental code
releases, and if present, the Z digit refers to the SVN revision.
(This last part was JRF's idea... I'm not sure it's totally
necessary.) Don't ask about the pre-release nomenclature, this is just
something I made up on the spot, mostly because cholmes suggested it.
We will be publishing formal API documentation shortly, so you can
have a better idea of what to expect from the major version numbers.
This is a first for us, folks, so please be patient while we work out
the kinks. Thanks so much for taking an interest so far, and we hope
OpenLayers helps you do good work!
