I actually got canvas to work in my scenario (Freemap). If you go to

http://nick.dev.openstreetmap.org/openlayers/

and select 'Walk route', then drag the mouse, you can draw a route on top of 
the map. A bit slow ATM, but hopefully this will improve. I also want to 
implement server-side persistence; the idea is that people can contribute 
favourite walks to share with others. The whole thing sits on top of 
OpenStreetMap data.
