Excellent Arnd! I was thinking of doing the same thing, just never found the time.
Will this development make it into the OpenLayers distribution?

now I can use OpenLayers as an easy to configure map client for mapserver.
With WMS you can only use the specific parameters. Mapserver offers a lot
more cgi-parameters, you can use to change your map and i want to test.
 
Generally I use also often the WMS-Request with Mapserver. Especially to get
the layers of my map. Only with javascript I have no better way found to get
the layers from the mapfile.

I'm just curious why you don't just use the WMS connector along with
MapServer in WMS mode?
